VOIP
or Voice Over
Internet Protocol is taking its inevitable course and making further
advances in the wireless market.
The
WebPhone, launched by Perth, Australia based company, Pie Networks,
works in a similar way to existing card and coin-operated payphones,
but it runs over a wireless or
broadband internet connection, and can also double as a WiFi hotspot.
Users of
the WebPhone device can check email applications, perform online
transactions, download music and email their photographs from digital
cameras.
They can also make telephone calls via
the internet using Voice over IP (VoIP) technology in much the same
way they would make a call using traditional landline telephone.

Voice Genesis:
a provider of cellphone voice and visual email, has announced the availability of its new Vemail VoiceEmail service that supports podcasts for an estimated 50 million mobile phones in the United States and Mexico.
Vemail VoiceEmail runs on the mobile phones of 16 operators. It lets users retrieve podcasts over the air with their mobile phones, and speak replies that are delivered directly to the podcast host. Vemail VoiceEmail also enables users to read email and speak replies on a mobile phone.
Vemail VoiceEmail allows users to select from a variety of featured podcasts at the VoiceGenesis.net web site, or enter a link to any publicly available podcast they want. The next time they check email with Vemail VoiceEmail on their mobile phone, the podcast will appear in their inbox. Users can also speak a reply that the podcast host may hear and opt to include in future podcasts.
"We are pleased to open up a new podcast delivery channel that makes podcasts available to so many more people," said Mark Marriott, CEO of Voice Genesis. "Not only is a portable media player not required, but the podcast need never be downloaded to a PC."

Webtone:
Talking about Webphone
and the like: it is many years ago, since Nortel Networks announced
Webtone. It was a word coined to describe a technology whereby power
lines carried the internet and all one had to do was plug into a
powerline and Eureka! one was on the internet.

It seemed that wireless technology and the advance in fibre optics had outdated the
technology as soon as it became available.
It was indeed a pleasant
surprise, then that booking into a motel on a recent trip to Western
Canada, we were given an odd contraption to access the Internet. The
device just plugged into a wall socket. On the other side was a
standard RJ45 input. It worked like a charm. True to tell, it was not
quite as fast as the normal high speed internet, but it was no slouch
either. It did not feel as if one was waiting for ever to download a
page.
On the other hand, it can be very
disappointing to find so few motels, inns and hotels across the U.S.A.
where the Internet is accessible. Maybe someone out there could take
up the challenge. It would seem like a not too daunting task to
provide webtone in all rooms.
