The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to allow the
Qualcomm's
plan
to deliver TV to cell phones project to move forward as long as
it limits interference with broadcast television stations.
Three years ago in an FCC auction, Qualcomm won a $38 million bid
for UHF Channel 55 throughout 80 percent of the nation. Qualcomm
later bought the rights to Channel 55 for the rest of the nation
in a private transaction.
The idea is to use Channel 55 to broadcast TV to cell phones as
television broadcasters convert to digital TV and no longer need
the UHF frequencies.
Verizon Wireless is the only U.S. wireless carrier so far that
will offer the service. It is expected that Verizon will begin
offering the TV broadcast service in the early 2007.

Cellcast:
Hundertelf,
an Internet
company in German, has launched a new cellphone podcasting service,
Cellcast.
Hundertelf allows registered users call from their cell phones, record
a message or song and make it available on the Web.
The phone calls are
recorded and converted to MP3 files. These are stored on the Cellcast
server or transferred to a server requested by the user. The service
is free, but the company plans to charge for premium services.
According to Hundertelf's
Wolfgang Fischer, "We’re really just testing the waters now to see
whether or not there’s demand for this type of service."
